Feeding the theater geek and the Disney kid inside of me

I am hoping that I will have an opportunity sometime before my birthday to be able to watch Atlantis Productions’ latest offering- Walt Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

I am a bonafide Disney kid. I grew up watching Darkwing Duck and Tale Spin at around 3 o’clock in the afternoon- usually known as Disney afternoon. My parents bought VHS tapes of Disney movies for me to watch, and there are very few Disney movies that I haven’t seen in the cinema when it is released in my country.

Among the traditional Disney Princesses, three of them remain my favorites to this very day. Belle from Beauty and the Beast (because she was a bookworm like me), Princess Jasmine from Aladdin (because I thought that she was pretty cool, she is stubborn like me, and to top it off, her singing voice is Lea Salonga, who I considered to be my hero or idol after learning that Lea is a Filipina), and of course, Ariel from The Little Mermaid (because we both can sing, and because my mom told me that I’m as stubborn as her). Ariel, however was my first favorite Disney Princess. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard that they would be bringing the Broadway (Disney version) version of The Little Mermaid to the Philippines, complete with puppets and all.

This play is directed by Chari Arespocachaga and Bobby Garcia, two known directors in the country, both of whom I have had the privilege to have been under as a Stage Manager (Disney’s High School Musical) and as an actor (Ateneo Blue Repertory’s Bat Boy). Top billing this classic Disney movie are Rachel Ann Go and Erik Santos who are both making their musical theater debuts.

I hope to be able to see this, and maybe drag my younger sisters with me, as I know that they would also probably enjoy this favorite story coming to life in front of them.
